Re: Have you seen this? Moose test

If you click on the swedish version, they do comparative test drives with an Audi Allroad up to 73 kph without problems. Not very surprising as it is a much lower car, but apparently the other big name suvs has handled this exercise without problems. I hope that Jeep will fix this without any negative effects on the offroad capability.

Re: Have you seen this? Moose test

Statement from Chrysler Group Chrysler Group engineers are investigating a Swedish magazine’s evaluation of the 2012 Grand Cherokee. During the evaluation, the publication was able to capture images of a Grand Cherokee on two wheels as it performed an extreme maneuver in an overloaded condition. Advised of this event by the magazine, Chrysler Group engineers made numerous attempts to reproduce the wheel-lift in a properly loaded vehicle. Extensive testing produced no such result. A subsequent evaluation was conducted by the magazine July 8 in Sweden and witnessed by Chrysler Group engineers. Three vehicles performed 11 runs on a course prepared by the magazine. None reproduced the original event. The uncharacteristic result was obtained using a vehicle loaded beyond its weight specifications. The Grand Cherokee’s weight limitations are clearly stated on the vehicle and in the owner’s manual. Also, the extreme maneuver performed by the magazine is not certified by any regulatory agency, nor is it used to establish any sanctioned safety ratings. Chrysler Group takes seriously any safety concerns and engineers are examining the event to better understand the magazine’s claims. A “Top Safety Pick” of the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2012 Grand Cherokee is an award-winning SUV that features Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Roll Mitigation as standard equipment. It meets or exceeds all government safety mandates and its outstanding performance has made it the most awarded SUV in history.

Well that made me feel a little better to read that. Although in the videos they have interior shots and I don't see how it would have been improperly loaded. Am I missing something with that?

Re: Have you seen this? Moose test

Wow. Was ESC even enabled (or working)?

I know that Consumer Reports found a similar issue -- ESC kicked in way too late, though it wasn't nearly as close to rolling -- but a TSB was released for it by Chrysler and a software update fixed the problem. Also according to WK2Jeeps that TSB only affected 2011 models so the 2012 that was in the moose test should've already had the fix.

Interesting, thanks for posting. I wonder how the vehicle was loaded "beyond its weight specifications"?

Re: Have you seen this? Moose test

This is the second safety-related issue discovered in the WK2 by the Europeans. The first one being the seat rail that nearly broke in two during EuroNCAP's frontal offset crash test.

So either the Europeans have a vendetta against Jeep and the Grand Cherokee for odd some reason... or these are indeed legitimate problems.

Either way, not really confidence-inspiring, as I'd really like to buy the new WK2 once I'm ready to purchase in a couple months, but if these problems aren't explained-away sufficiently by Chrysler/Jeep and/or fixed by then, unfortunately I'll have to look elsewhere, which is something I really don't want to do.

EDIT: After reading Chrysler's response again, it does definitely make me feel better. I'm curious to know more details from both parties though -- like just how overloaded was the vehicle past manufacturer specs, why the magazine would do that, and so on.

Re: Have you seen this? Moose test

This reminds me of the Isuzu Trooper issue back in the 90s.

Is there a website where we can see the tests that were performed with chrysler engineers (as the statement says) where it didn't "almost" roll over? The statement sounds like any other PR statement.

Cheers,
-A
