Oil Change Interval

When I first brought home the WK2 (5.7L) I was please to see in the owner's manual that the oil change interval was 8000 miles. However, I recently hit 3500 and now the EVIC complains that it's due for an oil change every time I start the car. So, which is it - 3000 or 8000?

Re: Oil Change Interval

Could it be that

1) Reminder is set on time period or fixed number of miles, whatever comes first. And time period came first?

2) Car actually has a sensor that detects that oil is "dirty" and sensor worked? Even though it seems kind of low miles for oil to get dirty.

Re: Oil Change Interval

Regardless of what the manual says 8,000 miles to the first oil change is way too long. 2,500 is more like it. I changed my last new one at 1,200 miles, and every 3,000 after that. If you use synthetic you could probably go somewhat longer.

That's a good thought, but I forgot to mention that the manual says six months or 8000 miles, whichever comes first. I'm at 3500 miles and the Jeep was assembled in June - three months ago.

Thanks, but I don't want to have this discussion here. I want to keep this thread relevant to the disparity between what the manual says and what the Jeep is telling me.

Re: Oil Change Interval

So does anyone know for sure if there is a sensor in the Jeep that actually checks oil quality?

Re: Oil Change Interval

you should always get your first oil change by 1000 miles bc the metal shavings should be removed on a new engine. After your first oil change with reg oil you could go 3500 or w/syn you could go 6-7k

Re: Oil Change Interval

From the owner's manual (page 271):

"The engine oil change indicator system is duty cycle based, which means the engine oil change interval may fluctuate, dependent upon your personal driving style."

More info on how to reset this indicator is on the same page.

Thanks for that. I didn't look into how to reset the indicator (as I figured it would be pretty simple), I just remembered reading 8k in the manual, then was surprised to see it come on at 3500. I looked up the interval again and sure enough it just said 8k.

Owner's guide also said engine can consume some oil in the beginning. So maybe check oil level too just in case.

Yeah, they don't list "normal duty" and "severe duty" intervals in the manual, but they imply fairly heavily that the schedule listed is what in the past would be known as the "normal duty" intervals. However, it's also widely known that precious few people qualify as "normal duty." Most of us drive "severe duty," which would shorten the intervals.

What I gather from the manual is that the oil change indicator is to be taken as authoritative over a book number, but the 6 months/8000 miles is a "do not exceed" value.
