Re: 5w 20 vs 10w 30

robpp referred to MDS flutter earlier. You say it seemed to smooth out the MDS. How does an un-smooth MDS evidence itself?

I can notice no symptoms of MDS operation, except when I suddenly nail...

Re: 5w 20 vs 10w 30

I think theyíre referring to Mobile 1 5W-20 fully synthetic oil. The performance upgrade is nor about engine power but the other advantages of fully synthetic oil.

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

IMHO these quotes are techno-babble with no evidence. As an engineer, I think they are also incorrect from a technical viewpoint. They can't get around the torque loss for the traction wheel...

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

I finally got my Overland and the factory build sheet for it. It says: DS7S - Conventional Differential Frt Axle

I rather expected that, after reading what the Jeep engineers said in the chat...

Re: 5w 20 vs 10w 30

Most lubricant manufacturers formulate the viscosity range of their engine lubricants (oil or synthetic), no matter how wide or narrow, so the working viscosity is essentially the same for all of...

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

Well said!

If you want to crawl rocks, would you buy the most expensive way of doing it? Most Overland owners probably just want to get up their driveway in deep snow. Even the rear ELSD might...

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

I should have said, "The properties of a drive train are defined by gear ratios that are non-dimensional".
Does that help any?

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

Exactly my point. They havenít told us anything about what will be in QD2.

Youíre right about wiki. However most of the time they get the principle right. Iím not implying that the story...

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

The properties of a drive train are defined by non-dimensional ratios. Therefore, given sufficient structural strength, a drive trainís performance is independent of the power it transmits.

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

Just to name one case: Assume you're rock-crawling uphill. You need all the grunt (wheel torque) you got to make it and just then your left front wheel becomes airborne. An ELSD or self-activating...

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

Jim, I donít think that statement is correct. Even open diffs transmit torque to both wheels of an axle, equally on dry pavement, and when one wheel is slipping, proportional to each wheelís...

Then how did they handle the airborne wheel situation? Didn't Jeeps have lockable diffs long before ABS/ELSD involvement?

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

In the engineering chat we learned that thereís no more front ELSD in QD2 for 2011. Instead, the ABS system is used for slip control. So, do they still lock the front axle in 4low? If one wheel...

Re: 9/8/10 Jeep engineers chat

Another question:

Since there's no more front ELSD in QD2 for 2011, how is front axle lock achieved while rock crawling uphill and one wheel becomes airborne?

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

I think they use the ABS to keep the first spinning wheel at the same speed as the other, creating a pseudo-locked axle.

The 2010 QD-II system has hydraulically controlled ELSDs in front and rear. The inherent response lag of these ELSDs limits their integration with some features of the...

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

Your system has to use the brake to lock an airborne wheel in rock crawling, and that cuts in half the torque available to the wheel on the ground. With an ELSD you get full torque. That’s the...

No front ELSD for QD II?

Rumor has it that the front ELSD has been dropped from QD II for the 2011 GJC, although it is advertized to have it at Jeep.com.

Is there any truth to this rumor?

Re: Quadra what??

Looks like 3.06 is standard in all 6 cyl JGCs. With the V8 you get a 3.47 for all JGCs except the 4X4 Overland that gets a 3.45 ratio. I wonder why the exception. No more 3.09 mentioned in the latest...

Understood. But I'd rather have the 3.45 anyway. More grunt when needed. It's a relative gas guzzler anyway. :)
